How to answer
Interview Questions

How many times have you walked out of an interview thinking that you
have the position, you’ve got all the experience, the qualifications required,
only to find out days or weeks later that you lost out to someone who
“interviewed better.”

How to answer interview questions

When formulating your answers to likely questions try and follow the STAR method - name a SITUATION that you faced OR a TASK that you had to complete, describe what ACTION that you took and give the RESULTS of your actions.

Why you need to practice, practice, practice

Giving thoughtful, interesting answers is both an art and a skill.

Regardless of the type of interview you will be facing, there are some general guidelines you can use to formulate the answers to the questions that have been asked.

Tips on how to handle interview questions

Regardless of how many interviews you have been to, or whether they are for the same kind of job - every interview will be different

  • Your CV or Resume should set the agenda for the interview along with the cover letter and any answers you had to supply as part of the selection criteria. Know your skills and achievements and be prepared to steer your answers towards them.
  • Take time to think. This gives you time to engage the brain before you open your mouth and blurt out the first thing that you think of.
  • If you think you misheard the question, or need clarification then ask the interviewer to repeat the question. This also gives you extra time to formulate your response.
  • If the question is in more than one part, you may answer the first part, and then ask for the second part of the question to be repeated if you are unsure what was being asked of you.
  • Be honest. Interviewers can always tell when you are being less than truthful with your answers. And don’t forget, your references will be checked, so anything untoward will be picked up.
  • Be specific – not vague in your answers.
  • Do not use the word “We” in your answer, the interviewer needs to know what part you played in the task/project/organisational structure, not what you did as a team. Even if the question is “team related” you must always refer to your part, although you can make reference to your team members roles.
  • Do not mumble.
  • Try not to use things like - err; mmm; hmm etc
  • Try not to use jargon.
  • Never respond with a Yes or No answer, interview questions are designed to be open not closed.
  • Use examples. But you should try and use different ones from those that you have already used in your application and/or CV, after all the people interviewing you have already seen those. However, you could start by saying – “As I mentioned in my application I was …. However, in addition to that I ….”

Always make sure that after you have given your answer that you wait for the interviewer to ask any follow-ups. They may need clarification for instance. If there is a delay between finishing your answer and the interviewer asking the next question. Do not fill the gap with meaningless chatter. The interviewer may be writing something down and/or gathering his or her thoughts before asking the next question.
