What is headhunting - and why do I still need a Resume?
Headhunting (also known as Executive Search) is the process of recruiting individuals to fill senior positions in organisations. It is also best practice to have an up to date LinkedIn profile, and related content such as posts and networking activity, since this platform is used by head hunters to search for and approach candidates.
Head Hunters work differently to recruiters
Recruiters actively try to match their existing pool of candidates to their vacant roles. They will scan the Resumes / applicant profiles in their database to pull out a selection of people who match their clients requirements, before advertising the role externally if they feel they need to so they can widen the candidate pool. Headhunters focus on the role first (Selection Criteria) and then search for the right candidate for their client.
This style of recruiting may be undertaken by an organisation's board of directors, HR executives, or by external executive recruitment representatives known as headhunters.
Resumes and The HeadHunter Network
Headhunters know where to look for their candidates
In traditional recruitment agencies, if their own candidate pool does not fit, they will advertise and wait for people to send in their Resumes and cover letters. Head hunters on the other hand have specific industry knowledge of a client's target market, which is far more important than in traditional recruitment. As a result, headhunters are more likely to specialise in one industry sector or sub-sector and know where to find their candidates.
While headhunters will have an active list of candidates they can approach, they are also looking for those "passive" candidates who are not currently looking for another job; headhunters often approach them directly via social networks. Though not actively looking, they may be open to considering the new role, if the headhunter can persuade them.
One of the keys to being head hunted is to make sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date and it is open for people to search. Another good way to keep your job search options open is to network with your network of contacts. If they know you are open to job offers, you might stand a chance of being approached.
