The emotional side of career changes and why you need to keep your Resume or CV up to date

In the Perth job market there have been significant booms and busts. We have seen trends where
jobs that were once in favour were relegated and outsourced; if your job can be done from home
it can be done overseas & cheaper, and while some Perth jobs have made a return, some have not.
While the change may be stressful, it is a good opportunity to look at your Resume or CV in a new light
and get ready to apply your strengths to new job opportunities that arise.

Resumes and Career Plans: Why being laid-off, retrenched or outsourced can be a good thing

Getting the sack, being retrenched or quitting a job because you've had enough can be a great motivator to achieve better things ...

Handling the emotional side of career transitions in Perth

Change can be a good thing, but if you've never been made redundant or sacked you may find it difficult to cope with the loss of a job, let alone think about updating your Perth Resume or CV for the next phase of your career.

It’s not easy being out of work in Perth. I've been there and done that a few times during my career. The first time I was made redundant I was a mess and didn't handle the process at all. However, the last time it happened, I was prepared for what was about to happen. While I still had a few bad moments I climbed out of them faster. It also helped that I had kept my Resume and LinkedIn profile up to date. But you do have to be prepared for the event, and treat yourself kindly as you cope with the transition. So how do you handle "rejection"?

You may think that people will judge you if you tell them that you have been retrenched or worse still “sacked”. There may be some people who will tell you that you are “stupid” to even think about giving up work because you want to look for something better. You may have doubts about your skills and abilities and take the first thing that is offered to you – just in case you don’t get offered anything else.
It is interesting that most if not all of my recent Perth clients have come to me because they want their Resume or CV updated - not because they've been laid off, but because they want a better position, and the recent problems with the global pandemic has shown them they can do anything.

Before jumping back into the Perth job workforce take some time and look at your career path to date, and I mean really look long and hard at your Resume or CV. Are you still happy with your chosen career, or is now a good time to think about something else? Is now a good time to think about starting that business, or do you want to go back "to school" to gain the qualifications to take you down an entirely different path?

Resumes and Career plans: Taking stock

Spend time and write down all your accomplishments to date. These are key indicators to your particular strengths, and can be applied to a new job or a change in career, and should be added to your cover letter and Resume or CV - if they are applicable to the new role. A lot of key strengths are applicable to many jobs in Perth - sometimes it takes being laid off to find time to evaluate them.

Once you have your list of strengths and accomplishments, now think about the ideal role or organisation you would love to work for. Go to their job boards and see if there are any openings. Demonstrate your transferable skills in your Resume or CV and cover letter, to apply for any jobs that appeal to you.

Resumes & Career transitions in Perth

Look for the positives. If the 2020s have taught us anything here in Perth - it is this - we can cope with anything.

First of all, it is important to remain positive about where you are and what you are doing (or not as the case may be). You may feel anger, sadness, and resentment or be joyously happy at the prospect of finding new opportunities. It depends whether you look at this period of time as an opportunity or not.

Boost your emotional and physical health. Find time to do some exercise and / or meditation. Something as simple as walking for a few minutes has been proven to reduce stress. Use the walking time to evaluate where you are and what you want to do. The answers may surprise you.

With the gyms shut in the pandemic, I had to get creative. Walking was already a major part of my life, but I had some weights made out of 3L milk containers (until the supply chain caught up) and I managed to snag a 4kg kettle-bell and I had a whole series of yoga and dance videos to work my way through. I am now fitter and healthier than ever and if I have any kind of "bad" moment, I put on my hiking boots and hit the trails.

Resumes and the numbers game: Do not take rejection letters personally

Job applications are a numbers game, and it's inevitable that many will either say 'no' or not respond

Ask for feedback on your job application. With more people looking for work here in Western Australia it stands to reason that we will not be successful every time. Do not get disheartened by the thanks but no thanks letters.

Before I made the decision to build my Resume business from the side hustle it was, to the absolute success story it is today, I was working full time in Marketing for a manufacturing company in Canning Vale, Western Australia. Then Covid hit and I was one of the ones made redundant. My Resume and LinkedIn profile was already up to date, so I started looking for a new job. After going through a number of interviews and being pipped by "someone better" - one company HR person smugly told me that they had a junior Marketing Exec interviewing for the role, I decided enough was enough and I would use my talents to grow my own business, and help people at the same time. By the way ... Every single one re-advertised the same position 3 months later...talk about waste of time...and no I didn't bother reapplying even after one of them asked me to.

While they may cause you to feel down and depressed, the reasons why you didn’t receive an invitation to the interview may be nothing to do with you. It may have been a company re-shuffle, or an internal candidate was in line for the job all along. With Perth government jobs it is a good idea to call them before you spend time updating your Resume or CV and putting in a job application. They are legally bound to advertise all positions regardless of whether there is a true vacancy or not. But, you need to accept that rejection is part of any job search and another letter for the pile is just another chance to work on your marketing strategy and application a bit more. Unemployed does not mean unemployable.

LinkedIn: Do not keep your job status a secret

Your network is important for finding a job in Perth

Let people know that you are on the look out for new Perth, Australia job opportunities. The people you tell may not be able to offer you any form of work, but they might know of someone who can. These same people may also be able to offer you advice and guidance on what they did when they were faced with the same situation. Anyone who tells you that they have never been out of work is either extremely lucky, or they have been in the same job since they left school. Of course they could also be stretching the truth just a little. Everyone has strategies they used to find work. Make a note of what they did and didn’t do, and then try and apply those strategies to your situation. Don’t assume that because they work in a different discipline to you, that their strategies cannot work.

Perth Resumes: Be positive about your previous employer

Perth is a very small place and social media is not the place to vent your feelings about your circumstances.

Try not to criticise your previous employer or the people you worked with, especially on Social Media since Perth is a very small place. Always write your application in a positive manner. This may be hard, especially if they “asked you to leave”. But remember that you may end up working with these same people at some point again the future. It may also raise important questions about how well you deal with difficult situations if you cannot find something positive to say about your time with a particular organisation.

Finally - Be busy AND productive. It is easy to fill your day with things that do not get you anywhere. Remember looking for a job is your job when you are out of work.
