Why your Resume is vital in navigating the Interview process
Congratulations you have reached the interview stage of the hiring process.
Your written communication skills outlined in your resume and cover letter have gotten you to this point.
Now it is the turn to show just how good your verbal communication skills really are.

The First Interview
The first interview may be via the telephone, over zoom or face-to-face. The way you prepare for each is the same.
Preparation is the key to a successful interview
Just as the Perth hiring organisation will be researching you, you MUST research the organisation as well.
Research the company. Check their website and social media feeds. Knowing what products/services the business sells, the market it trades in and having an idea of its overall strategy is crucial when you get to the interview table. Seek out your interviewers on LinkedIn – this will ensure that on the day you have a perfectly clear idea of what you are interviewing for and who you are interviewing with.
Research yourself. The hiring organisation will be checking social media, so make sure your profiles are clean, or set them to private.
Know where you are going and practice getting there a day or two prior to the interview, and if you have never practiced with zoom - you should download the software and check the sound works and the camera angle is flattering. Also make sure your background is not detrimental. Sounds silly, but what if there are roadworks and detours you don't know about, or your microphone doesn't work. It happens, so preparation is one of the keys to a successful interview and removes those stressors from the equation.
First impressions count so make sure you look the part - yes even on the telephone, you will feel better if you look the part.
Print out your resume and cover letter so you can remember what you told them, and more importantly you can quickly scan the facts and figures - harder to do in a face to face interview, but you can refresh yourself before you go through the organisations front door.

Compare your skills and strengths to the job that is on offer
This is an important step as your observations and answers to the questions will come from this preparation.
You will have about an hour to put your points across, so make them count. Work out the answers to likely questions - these will include:
- Why are you interested in this position?
- What do you know about the company?
In the main, the remaining questions will relate to the specific job criteria and the role you played in the results you are claiming. Think I not We. Make sure you prepare suitable responses and practice saying them out loud. If you can, record yourself saying your prepared answers - be prepared to be shocked at how bad you sound. This is why we prepare, much like an actor learns his / her lines.
Work out some questions to ask them
One of my favourite questions is "What do you like about working here?" Another one to consider is "What projects will I be working on?" If nothing else, ask them when a decision will be made
Be prepared for a second interview and in some cases you may be asked to perform some kind of test to prove you can do what you say you can do. Can you create the perfect weld - then show us. Can you write a PR piece for a product launch - then please write one and submit it before the new closing date so we can short-list the short-list. Rarely is a single interview the norm here in Perth.
