Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a great executive resume?

It should be concise, bespoke, focus on accomplishments and outshine the competition. More...

Your showcase - An effective resume or CV for senior executives should be well organised, concise, and easy to read. It must succinctly pitch the applicant's educational background, professional experience, significant accomplishments, personal attributes, and key skills.

Relevance is critical - The document should be tailored specifically to the job or position being targeted. If it isn't, it'll very likely fail the ATS screen.

It needs to shine bright - An executive resume or CV needs to outshine high-quality submissions from other accomplished professionals. It should provide detailed insights into the applicant's professional journey, highlighting significant achievements and contributions. Crucially, it must showcase evidence of leadership capabilities, cultural fit, a strong work ethic, extensive management experience, and a robust business network.

A focus on your accomplishments

We will work together to carefully align your resume or CV with the employer's selection criteria. More...

Evidence of adding value - An executive CV must clearly demonstrate achievements to stand out in a competitive field. Focusing on accomplishments not only highlights your skills and experience, it shows potential employers how you have added value to previous organisations. This might seem obvious, but there is an all too common focus in executive applications upon duties and responsibilities.

Show you're results-driven - A resume or CV focused on accomplishments not only demonstrates your ability to meet and exceed job requirements but also portrays you as a results-driven professional. This focus is especially crucial for senior executives, where demonstrating leadership capabilities, a strong work ethic, management experience, and a robust business network can significantly enhance your appeal.

Pitching your accomplishments - We will work together to align your resume or CV with the employer's selection criteria. Stating your accomplishments provides concrete evidence of your capabilities, illustrating your critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Highlighting, for example, how you have made money, saved money, or improved productivity showcases your impact. Providing quantified 'PAR' (Problems -> Actions -> Results) examples strengthens your application, making your achievements tangible and relatable to the employer's needs. See the 'accomplishment checklist' below.

CVs & ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems)

It's crucial to understand today's recruitment processes in you're to succeed. More...

Understand the ATS - An ATS functions similarly to a Google-like algorithm that most employers use as an initial screening tool to disqualify low-quality resumes or CVs. Therefore, understanding and addressing ATS requirements is critical to ensure your document passes the initial screen and reaches human reviewers.

Tailoring for success - We will work together to ensure your resume or CV is formatted correctly and includes the relevant keywords from the job description. This process not only improves the document’s chances of passing through ATS filters but also aligns it precisely with the employer's selection criteria, showcasing your most pertinent skills and experiences.

Keywords matter - Including specific keywords and phrases that reflect the job requirements is essential. This not only demonstrates your qualifications but also ensures your resume or CV is recognised by the ATS as a strong match for the position.

What exactly are 'selection criteria'?

Consider these your 'guide to standing out', ensuring your resume or CV perfectly matches the attributes the employer is looking for. More...

Understanding Selection Criteria - Selection criteria delineate the exact qualifications, experiences, and personal attributes a company values in candidates, especially critical for executives poised to align with an organisation's strategic aims and culture.

Such criteria typically include a blend of essential and preferred qualifications, highlighting:

  • Demonstrated prowess in leadership and adeptness in team oversight.
  • Advanced educational qualifications and pertinent professional history.
  • Strategic acumen and sector-specific insight.
  • International experience, showcasing a global perspective and cross-cultural competency.
  • Notable accomplishments that have had a tangible impact on previous organisations.
Often referred to by various titles like Job Specifications, Position Requirements, and Competency Frameworks, these criteria provide a detailed blueprint of the expectations for applicants, addressing both technical abilities and behavioural virtues.

Caution is advised in relying on job descriptions, which are often maintained by compensation teams or HR Officials and rarely updated, possibly not reflecting current role requirements. The gap between these descriptions and what decision-makers seek can be considerable, with 'minimum criteria' usually the only reliable indicator. Direct engagement with recruiters or leveraging networks for insights into the role's actual demands can provide a more accurate guide.

Selection Criteria Statements

In Australia, jobs in the public sector, particularly government roles at the federal, state, and local levels, commonly require applicants to address selection criteria by writing stand-alone statements. These statements are a crucial part of the application process and are used to assess the applicant’s skills, experience, and suitability for the role.

Key types of jobs that typically require addressing selection criteria include:

  • Government Positions - Roles within federal, state, and local government agencies often require detailed responses to selection criteria. This includes administrative, policy, and project management positions.
  • Public Service Roles - Positions within various public service departments, such as health, education, and social services, usually require applicants to address selection criteria.
  • Education Sector - Jobs in universities, TAFEs, and other educational institutions may require addressing selection criteria, especially for academic and administrative roles.
  • Healthcare Sector - Certain roles within the public healthcare system, such as those in hospitals or community health services, may require addressing selection criteria.
  • Non-Profit and Community Organisations - Some roles within non-profit organisations, especially those funded by government grants, may require applicants to address selection criteria.
Addressing selection criteria involves providing specific examples from past experiences to demonstrate how the applicant meets each criterion. This process helps employers evaluate the candidate's qualifications and suitability for the position based on predefined criteria.

Avoiding Job Application disasters

Numerous individuals submit applications for countless roles, only to be met with silence. More...

Here's where applicants often stuff up:

Overlooking the ATS

The primary stumbling block? Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). A staggering 70% of resumes are thought to be sifted out by these digital gatekeepers at the first hurdle because they fail to align with the employer's selection criteria, marking the downfall of the one-size-fits-none resume.

The Generic Resume Trap

Distributing the same resume for varied applications is a guaranteed misstep. Personalise your resume for each role, highlighting how your unique skills and experiences position you as the ideal candidate.

Incompatibility with Job Specifications

If your resume doesn't echo the skills and experience the job ad demands, chances are it'll be passed over. Ensure your resume closely matches the job requirements detailed in the employer's specification.

Overly Stylised Resumes

Avoid overly stylised resumes that prioritise looks over functionality. Laden with colours and complex layouts, these resumes often confuse Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), rendering them fatally ineffective. Also, many organisations and jurisdictions will reject applications containing photographs to avoid accusations of gender or ethnicity bias.

To avoid the pitfalls and boost your chances of an interview, focus on devising a resume that's not just clear and concise but also bespoke for the job in question and compatible with ATS requirements.

Career Strategy Checklist

`

Approach Job Applications as Strategic Marketing

Recognise that job applications are not merely administrative tasks; they are strategic marketing endeavours. Your resume and cover letter must sell your unique value proposition effectively, adapted to each employer's needs.

Understanding Employer Needs

Dive deep into what prospective employers seek and how their needs align with your experience. Understanding their competitive landscape, decision dynamics, mission, and pain points is crucial.

Refining Personal Brand

Develop and refine your personal brand to clearly communicate your leadership qualities and unique value proposition. Your brand is your currency in the executive job market.

Effective Networking

Leverage your professional network to gain insights, uncover opportunities, and secure referrals. Networking is not just about who you know but also who knows you.

Crafting Bespoke Pitches

Tailor your applications and pitches to directly address the specific challenges and requirements of each employer. A generic approach will not suffice at this level.

Framing Accomplishments

Present your accomplishments in a way that aligns with the employer's needs, demonstrating how your past successes make you the ideal candidate for leadership roles.

Hesitant to toot your own horn?

Saying you 'participated' in a major accomplishment sells yourself short. Use action verbs. Instead of "Was responsible for assorted program roll-outs," say, "Led and completed nine multi-million dollar program roll-outs, delivered on time and under budget."

Have you been Procrastinating?

Executives all too often start resume-building just a week before the closing date. Reflect on whether this is a wise investment in your career and if a lack of a strategic plan is causing your career block.

Accomplishment Checklist

Resolving problems through personal actions

A 'problem' in this context is an issue restricting an enterprise, so you must consider this from a prospective employer's point-of-view. Which problems or challenges that you've faced in your career did you resolve or contain? Which opportunities do you help exploit?

Financial Accomplishments

Did you implement actions that saved or made money, improved efficiency or productivity? Did you boost sales, open a new territory or establish a new office, department, branch or facility? Did you reduce waste, save time or minimise effort? Did you help to limit liability by suggesting WHS or security improvements? Did you redesign, streamline or reorganise; or implement any projects, plans, programs, processes, or introduce services or products?

Creative and innovative Accomplishments

Did you introduce a technical, e-business, marketing, logistical, IP or creative innovation that was adopted? Or identify a need for a product, service, plan, program, system, method, procedure, technique? Did you develop or design a new plan, program, service, product, process, project, system, method or strategy?

Interpersonal and leadership accomplishments

Did you help improve employee relations or morale; facilitate or improve communication among employees, with clients, or with the community or other stakeholders? Did you train, present or mentor managers, staff, trainees or interns? Did you collaborate/liaise with others and act as a contributing team member? Did you influence various audiences through improved communications?

Quality and added-value accomplishments

Did you improve quality or standards for the recruitment or retention or staff and associates, products, services and customer experience?

What is the PAR Technique?

Problems->Actions->Results (PAR) is a discipline to help you focus on your career accomplishments. Statements derived from this populate the 'experience' sections of your CV or Resume, and illustrate you have the expertise and functional skills to meet an employer's needs.

Similar techniques include STAR: Situation or Task -> Action -> Results (government, academia, nursing) & SAO: Situation -> Action -> Outcome (education).

APS Appointments

The Australian Public Service (APS) utilises an ILS (Integrated Leadership System) framework around five core capability clusters to assist in capability assessment and succession management.

Before you write your CV

While selection criteria may not be directly specified in a job description, they must be addressed if your application is to be tailored to the employer's goals, requirements, and circumstances.

  1. Your attributes: The first circle represents your (the applicant's) knowledge, achievements, and skills
  2. Job description: The second circle represents the employer's strategic and operational needs in filling the post
  3. The market: The third circle represents the broader trends and challenges facing the employer's industry

This shows why every top executive CV and its accompanying documents must be aligned to the selection criteria, needs, and situation of each prospective employer's organisation. Venn and the CV (Bradshaw and Edwards, 2022).

Aligning your CV

Selection criteria may not be stated explicitly in a job description, but identifying and addressing them is crucial if you are to align your application to the employer's needs, requirements, and circumstances.

  1. Your attributes: The first circle represents your (the applicant's) knowledge, achievements, and skills
  2. Job description: The second circle represents the employer's strategic and operational needs in filling the post
  3. The market: The third circle represents the broader trends and challenges facing the employer's industry

Client Testimonials

As an experienced CEO, MD and Board Member with a lifetime of experience in the industry, I thought I could leave my old job and walk straight into a new one without a problem. After several months of trying and failing to land an interview I decided to reach out to you. The results have blown me away. I just wanted to let you know while I am waiting on the outcome of my interview, I could not have done it without your help.

- A.J. (Mining, Oil & Gas)

My son needed help with a Graduate Application to a mining supply company and not knowing the first thing about how to present an application of this nature, let alone write one, I came to you and have to say it was absolutely the best money I have ever spent. Even when I tried to submit the application and failed miserably, you were still there to offer advice and guidance. I know where to come when I need mine updated.

- J.V. (Mother)

I must have applied for over a hundred jobs and didn't get to the interview once. I know living in outback Australia the chances of landing a job in the mines is usually pretty good, especially given my skills. But the Resume I had - just wasn't up to it which is really humbling. So I paid for your professional Resume package, and the first time I sent it to the company they were immediately on the phone. I should have swallowed my pride and asked for help a lot sooner. Love your work mate.

- R.S. (Mechanical Fitter)

I had had my Resume so-called "professionally done" by another company, and they obviously didn't have a clue as to what was required. I was so appalled by what they sent, especially given the cost. Not only was it poorly written but the formatting was terrible; you could tell it wasn't created in Australia. So when I entrusted you to create a new Resume for me, I did so because you answered every question and put my mind at ease, and the finished result is just incredible, it seems like you have known me forever and portrayed my skills perfectly.
